Autumn Equinox

Three-quarters through the year we reach the Autumn Equinox (Sept. 22 or 23) when the sun again rises due east and sets due west. Day and night are again of equal length. This is the beginning of Autumn. The goodness of light and warmth begins to fail us. The badness of darkness begins to overcome the goodness of light.

Saturday, 9/30

Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year for religious Jews.

Halloween, perhaps our weirdest annual celebration, is even stranger than it seems. Unlike the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving, it is neither patriotic nor historical, yet it is celebrated nationally. Unlike Christmas, Easter or Passover, Halloween is not associated with a particular religion. Yet it weaves spirituality, death and religious beliefs into our present and historical imaginations.

The sun rises south of due east and sets south of due west. The sun is also at a low angle in the sky. Because the days are short and the sun is at a low angle it is cold during Winter.

Tenth of Tevet, the tenth day of the Hebrew month of Tevet, is a fast day in Judaism. The fasting commemorates the siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylonia—an event that began on that date and ultimately culminated in the destruction of Solomon's Temple (the First Temple) and the conquest of the Kingdom of Judah (today southern Israel).
